When mines expand…

(Când se extind carierele...)
România, 2014, 15 min.
Directed by
Mihai Stoica

The film attempts to puzzle together the stories of people living in Romania’s Gorj county, in villages that are affected by the expansion of open-pit coal mines, operated by the state-owned Oltenia Energy Complex - a company with poor environmental track record and huge social impact. These are old villages, but the expansion of the coal mines threatens to eat them up little by little.

Some villages have already disappeared, while few houses are left of others, but those people who still live in the villages are at the mercy of a company who’s exploits leave no room for concern over them or their livelihoods.

This is their story.
